Barnard Castle: A developer wants to open a wine bar, but neighbors are worried about noise. They’ve raised concerns that it could disrupt their lives.

The alcohol license for the Inglenook Wine Bar is on hold. This is due to serious worries from residents. Morgan Derbyshire, the applicant, believes the bar will help revitalize a historic building and support the local high street.

During a licensing hearing, Mr. Derbyshire explained that the bar would offer a unique selection of wines. He wants it to be a cozy spot for locals and visitors to enjoy drinks without causing noise.

However, some neighbors voiced their concerns at the hearing. They worry about how the bar might affect their homes and the area. The proposed bar is located in a historic property, which adds to their worries.

David Hepburn, who lives next door, shared that he can hear everything from the bar. He joked about offering Mr. Derbyshire Lemsip for his coughs. He expressed that having a bar next door would be too much for him and his family.

Another neighbor, Peter Colley, argued that the area is mostly residential and doesn’t need a bar. He fears it could lead to disorder and trouble for families living nearby.

Liz Colley also expressed her disbelief at the situation. She feels that Mr. Derbyshire’s plans are disrupting her life. In response, Mr. Derbyshire assured everyone that the bar would not be rowdy. He wants it to be a quiet place, closing earlier than other businesses.

The committee will reconsider the alcohol license later this year. Councillor Carole Hampson mentioned that they need more information from environmental health and an independent noise assessment before making a decision.
