Leeds: ASDA staff might get a huge payout. A tribunal ruled on equal pay claims. This could mean up to £1.2 billion in back pay for many workers.

The case compares jobs mostly held by women in stores to those mainly done by men in warehouses. The tribunal found that many shop roles are equal in value to higher-paid warehouse jobs.

Out of 14 lead claimants, 12 won their case. They argued for equal pay for their work from August 2008 to June 2014. This is a big win for the staff.

However, two roles didn’t win: personal shoppers and grocery assistants. This means about 20% of claims are now void. The law firm representing the workers is thinking about appealing this decision.

Leigh Day, the law firm, represents over 60,000 workers. They say this ruling is a big step for ASDA staff. They hope ASDA will resolve the cases quickly.

ASDA employs over 127,000 workers in its 1,200 UK stores. A spokesperson said they reject claims of discriminatory pay. They plan to defend their pay structure in court.
