A Cork charity has stepped in to rescue goats seen wandering distressed in the city, addressing concerns from local residents about their welfare.
Videos showed one goat struggling to walk due to overgrown hooves. A group of about six goats was seen near the Ballyvolane Fire Station, causing traffic issues.
This isn’t the first time these goats have been seen roaming. They’ve been a concern for a while now. Thankfully, My Lovely Horse Rescue, a local charity, stepped in to help.
They drove to Ballyvolane after seeing photos of the goats. The charity had previously rescued a goat from the area, affectionately named Gordon Ram-sey.
On Saturday, two Gardaí joined the charity volunteers to catch the goats. They managed to corner five of them, but three escaped. The goat with the overgrown hooves was caught and taken for treatment.
Long-time volunteers noted they had never seen hooves in such bad shape. Kelly Mellerick, a volunteer, described the goats as ‘feral’ and mentioned plans to round up the rest with help from the city council and local Gardaí.
Cork City Council is aware of the situation and is working with the charity to resolve it. They’ve already taken in the injured goat and are planning to rehome others.
Kelly expressed gratitude for the initial success but noted that resources are limited. It might take time before they can return to Cork for more rescues.
My Lovely Horse Rescue relies on public donations to operate. They received a grant last year, but the costs to care for all the animals exceed a million euros. If you want to help, check out their website for donation details.
