Newcastle celebrated the Chinese New Year with a vibrant parade, traditional dances, and lively performances, showcasing the city’s rich cultural diversity and community spirit.
Newcastle: The Year of the Snake kicked off with a bang as the city celebrated Chinese New Year. The parade started at Grey’s Monument and moved through the city centre.
It went up Blackett Street, Gallowgate, and onto Stowell Street, which is part of one of the UK’s five Chinatowns. Kids waved paper dragons while drums filled the air. It was a spectacular sight!
Many people gathered to watch the lion and dragon dances, which are highlights of the Lunar New Year. There were also traditional dance and music performances, with the crowd cheering “Happy New Year!”
The local Chinese community, along with Newcastle City Council and NE1 Ltd, organized the celebrations. Yvonne Ng from the Chinese Festivities Group said Lunar New Year is very important, and they appreciate Newcastle’s support for the traditions.
